1994 release. O-type is the long-going, occasionally active off-spring of MX-80 in which Rich Stim and his streaming shards of tears steps aside to allow the MX rhythm trio of Bruce Anderson/Dale Sophiea/Marc Weinstein (plus the addition of a 2nd guitarist, Jim Hrabetin) to wail away.

Title: Lugubrious
Label: FAMILY VINEYARD
Format: CD
Price: $12.00
Catalog #: FV 010CD
"On Lugubrious, O-Type continues explorations and deconstructions with their most focused and startling document of the past two years. An extension of previous releases -- 'Strict,' 'Brutality II: Balkana,' and 'Medication' -- these late night improvisations have been edited, recycled and buffed by Sophiea. Entering a darker phase, the nine pieces are apocalyptic orchestrations for post-industrial and pre-death times. There is no dancing or chilling inside the forest of Lugubrious. Logging into the finer details of glitch expansion, from behind the mixing desk Sophiea draws out the micro-rhythms allowing them to fester and consume the rich tapestries of Anderson's crowing guitar all the while building backdrops of phase-shifting drones and tape works. Not part of any particular scene or genre stamp, O-Type's lurking calls out nods to academic works, film scores, French literature and the randomness and processing of electronic spindles. For the first time in the series, Anderson and Sophiea approach digital psychedelia with Lugubrious: the time-lagging effects of Steve Reich or Neu! loft about in this California living."

Title: Western Classics
Label: FAMILY VINEYARD
Format: CD
Price: $13.50
Catalog #: FV 031CD
"O-Type is members of the legendary and iconoclast MX-80 sans singer Rich Stim. Here Bay Area guitarist / bassist Bruce Anderson, sampler/sound sculptor Dale Sophiea, Jim Hrabetin (guitar, bass) and dual drums of Dave Mahoney and Marc Weinstein facilitate a dark venture into electronic ambient tendencies within a six-string frame that references the sustained tones of Morton Feldman to Ennio Morricone. Western Classics is not a tribute per se to the films represented as song titles ('Mean Streets,' 'The Searchers,' 'Out of the Past') though each musical venture takes a nod to the cinematic view before remorphing and adding fields of abstraction."
